About Us

History

Golf for the Physically Challenged (GPC), or Challenge Golf traces its roots back to a transformative era that predates June 1991 when the late Larry Armatage and Family Golf laid the foundation for what would eventually evolve into Golf for the Physically Challenged.

The pivotal meeting in June 1991 not only sowed the seeds for GPC's official registration in 1992 but also brought together dedicated people instrumental in developing a complementary charity, Oakville Strokers in 1995.

Family Golf served as the nurturing home for GPC until the conclusion of the 2013 season. Subsequently, Challenge Golf embarked on a significant journey, relocating to Tee Zone, a facility that generously provided its driving range to GPC at no cost since its opening in the same year. Berny Fudge not only played a critical role in our 1992 establishment, but also a pivotal role in orchestrating our 2013 transition by establishing crucial connections with BOT Construction and Tee Zone Driving Range. The 2014 golf season witnessed GPC flourishing in its new home from May to October, marking a new chapter in its journey.

Beyond the contributions of the late Larry Armatage and Family Golf, the narrative is enriched by the involvement of OALASA, now recognized as Paragolf Ontario. Douglas Walker, alternating between the roles of OALASA Treasurer and President, played a vital role in securing GPC's first two Golf Carts and maintaining regular donations. Although Doug's name is absent from the current list of directors, Rod Reimer, who served as president in 2017 alongside Doug as Treasurer, continues to contribute to Challenge Golf's ongoing story.

Following the pandemic, Challenge Golf resumed its program in 2022. Through partnerships with Mind Forward Brain Injury Service and Passion for Parkinson's Foundation, our participant numbers reached a record high in 2023.

Looking ahead, Challenge Golf remains committed to its mission for the years to come. We express our gratitude to everyone who has contributed along the way.

Together, let's continue working towards making our community an even better place.
